Welcome to Dalbeattie

Dalbeattie, in the Urr Valley in South West Scotland, was originally a granite quarrying town, founded in 1793.

The naturally occurring granite is a feature of the Maxwell Park properties. The former port town is on the Colvend Coast, with yachting and sailing activities at nearby Kippford.

The town takes its name from 'Dalbeatha', which means 'Vale of the Birches' and the birch trees are a feature of Dalbeattie forest. The 'Hardrock Trail' in Dalbeattie forest is one of the 7 stanes, one of many mountain biking trails, and is also home to walks and the natural wildlife of Dumfries and Galloway, including the red squirrel, buzzard, otters, roe deer and barn owls.

The unspoilt beauty of the area has become a refuge for birds and birdwatchers with the Caerlaverock Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the National Nature Reserve near Caerlaverock, the RSPB reserve at Mersehead and the Wigtown Local Nature Reserve.

Residents and visitors enjoy fishing for trout and salmon in streams and lochs, or sea angling on the beaches of the Colvend Coast. The town of Palnackie hosts the Grande Internationale World Flounder Tramping Championships in late July or early August every year.

Dalbeattie Golf Course at Maxwell Park is just next door to our Dalbeattie properties, and other nearby 9 hole and 18 hole golf courses include the Covlend Golf Club, Castle Douglas, Craigieknowes, and the Championship Links Course at Southerness. Park of Tongland Golf Academy and Driving Range is in nearby Kirkcudbright.

There is an unusual quality of light in the area. The town of Kirkcudbright, a few miles from Maxwell Park, attracted Scottish artists during the early part of the 20th Century for this very reason. The Kirkcudbright Gallery showcases work by leading Scottish Painters of the 19th and 20th Century. The annual Wickerman festival also attracts interest from outwith the area.

National Trust for Scotland site Threave Gardens and Historic Scotland site Threave Castle are further examples of the rich culture and history of the area that are being maintained and made available to the people who live, work and visit Dalbeattie and the surrounding towns.
